BLUES BY THE BEACH
Israel/USA, 2004 English/Hebrew (with English subtitles), 75 min., Director: Joshua Faudem

When Bronx-based producer Jack Baxter set out to make a documentary in Israel in 2003, he and director Joshua Faudem gravitated toward Mike’s Place, an Anglo-American blues bar on the beach in Tel Aviv. They felt this international hangout would be a metaphor for the friendly side of Israel -- different from the customary images of terrorism and conflict.

But before they were finished, their film changed into one that presented a completely different metaphor, one about coping with daily life in the wake of violence. It became a stark and very emotional record of what it means to live in a war zone and what that means to the personal relationships of those involved in the story -- including the filmmakers themselves.

Showing with THE TRIBE
